What is meant by the phrase, teachers should be a more of a "guide on the side than a sage on the stage"

I am trying to figure out what this means...can anyone help?

What is meant by the phrase, teachers should be a more of a "guide on the side than a sage on the stage"
I think it means if you teach that you should guide the student so they can reach their highest potential and not take all the credit and do everything for them or think more highly of your -self.
Reply:Practice what you preach.

Teachers should provide you proper guidelines to tackle problems, rather than giving you preachings as the situation demands.
Reply:Well, it really means that teachers are more effective and more better that like a priest or a sage. Trust me, it's true
Reply:in my opinion, that phrase means that teachers should be more of guides that are kind of like more learned friends who are helping you out of the classroom rather than standing before you in class droning on about some thing or other that sounds completey boring or pointless or whatever.
Reply:A teacher should step aside and let you do your own thing, instead of being overbearing and forcing you to learn a certain way.
