Does anyone have sage advice on forging a career in journalism?

Are there any journalists out there who can tell me the reality of how a person can forge a career for themselves in journalism? Is it luck? Or is it good honest hard work and no sleep for a few years?

If anybody could give me some wise words I would be very grateful.

Just about all of the above! Have a look at this site and also search under NUJ. You will need to join the NUJ and they are very helpful.

Reply:Journalism is a difficult career to break into. In many areas there are simply more people who want to do the job, than there are jobs available. It is especially challenging to become a newspaper journalist these days. The daily newspaper in my city recently went through a round of layoffs that resulted in many journalists looking for work. With that said, if journalism is your passion, go for it! Start by contacting a successful reporter to serve as your mentor. Ask him or her for recommendations on getting started in your area.

You might also consider a career in public relations, which is very similar to journalism, and often pays much more.

Another often overlooked way to get started is through the U.S. Military. I once knew an editor who quit his job at the newspaper for a career as a Navy journalist because it paid better. All of the services have enlisted journalists serving in both broadcasting and print roles.

I wish you success in your career.
Reply:Hard work and sometimes it can cause real morality issues - you may be asked to knock on the door and get a quote off a family who has lost a loved one and expected to get a quote or else - its the way they prove they are good reporters.
Reply:You are literate which is a good start. Learn to lie, exaggerate, invent stories and then sell them to any of the major tabloid papers. Look at Piers Morgan - didn't he do well from lying?
Reply:You need to be loud and have a contoversial opinion you are prepared to defend to the death.
Reply:hard work, that is the key.
Reply:If you can't find a story - make it up!
Reply:sorry dear i have no clue !
