Reply:There are several different types of salvia, or sage, some ornamental, some edible. Culinary sage, salvia officinalis. (the kind that comes in the spice bottle) is one grown most often. It comes in the familiar gray, also a golden leaved variety and a variegated green and white variety. Pineapple sage and melon sage are also edible. Ornamental perennial salvia and annual salvias that are used as bedding plants are not. Tho they are not poisonous, they have no flavor that you would want to eat. Culinary salvias are usually refered to as sages, while ornamental ones are salvia.

Russian sage is not a salvia, and not edible. Could be toxic to some people.

Reply:They are both in the genus salvia so they have similarities. If you see sage flower it is a pink raceme of flowers similar to the ornamental salvias. But they are different species and only sage (Salvia officinalis) can be eaten.
